 MYSTERY CRAFT – EUPEN 1989

INTRODUCTION

November 29, 1989, a mysterious airborne intruder was seen by thousands of people over a small area around Eupen, Belgium
. I became aware of this via a news bulletin on the radio stating that two members of the federal police became public with an extra ordinary sighting. I immediately became intrigued and my first reaction was to contact their headquarters in Eupen. I presented myself as an investigator because this was my plan, to investigate and learn more – and eventually solve – this intriguing sighting. PRO-SEETI was born on the spot,  that simple.

I spoke on the phone  with their chief who still sounded exited. He was eager to tell his amazing story to whoever was listening.  From him I learned that he also witnessed this strange intruder from his office on the second flour, in the casern in Eupen. He stated that he was, at the time, gazing in amazement at an – hardly moving - arrangement of bright light concentrated in one location in the sky.  I also learned that this was not the first sighting of this strange airborne intruder by federal policemen in this part of my country, not far from the border of Germany. So this was getting weird and I became very intrigued. I made an appointment to pay them a visit the next weekend in Eupen. I also asked him to arrange a meeting with both Heinrich Nicoll and Hubert Von Montigny.

The next day I also spoke on the phone with colleges of Heinrich and Hubert who saw the strange invader some days before.

MY INVESTIGATION

This is an update of my personal investigation in Eupen (Dec 9. 1989) no more than two weeks after the sighting of an airborne triangular “craft/structure” with hover capabilities, three blinding lights pointed downwards and a complex central pulsating red/orange light source with remarkable capabilities. On more than one occasion a red sphere came detached from this central part of the triangle.

In Eupen I had the opportunity to interview the two major witnesses of this remarkable incident. In a small office in their casern I was able to speak privately with federal police men Heinrich Nicoll and Hubert Von Montigny. After this meeting I was invited to visit, accompanied by them and members of the press, the two major locations of their sighting (see pictures). The second location is well documented in this article but not the first location due to time pressure.

Arriving at the first location (Nov 29, 1989) both witnesses saw an airborne triangular structure floating silently towards them, halting in mid air, to finally move away from them in opposite direction. To do so the triangle was demonstrating, for the first time, one of his remarkable capabilities by making a flat 180° turn before moving back to Eupen. At a later stadium - in this complex sighting – both Heinrich and Hubert chose to move to a second location, a hillside, with unobstructed view on the surroundings (see pictures).

When they saw this airborne structure for the first time they decided to move to a more safe location, away from the main road to Eupen, next to a meadow directly in the anticipated flight path of the intruder. A flat triangular structure, with three blinding lights underneath, kept closing in but came suddenly to a halt, in midair, right in front of them. From this location they had a clear view on the intruder, but no surface details became visible under these extreme light conditions. Only the pulsating red-orange light source, in the centre, revealed some intriguing details. In my personal interview they explained to me that this central light source was extremely complex in nature, hard to describe. During my interview (Dec 9. 1989)I insisted to make an effort and finally they both agreed they saw something like a rotating torus hanging underneath a dark surface. This torus was bathing in a yellow/reddish glow with something moving inside. It was as if a pulsating light, or blob, was circling inside this circular tube/torus, they told me in exitement.

Clearly Heinrich and Hubert had a hard time explaining to me what they really saw, at the time, unable to compare it with something known. Still under impression they agreed upon these remarkable details and also the fact that this rotating structure - torus with blob - was, in their opinion, not really connected to the central part of the main body. Reading original reports I came to the conclusion that this central light source was even more complex and did sometimes behave in a complex way according to some witnesses of this triangular “craft”. Some of them revealed that they saw the red central sphere move away from the main body to come closer or, in some cases, just fly away. One of the witnesses of this remarkable aspect was police officer Dieter Plummans (also member of the gendarmerie)

In their statement they stated that, to their amazement, these lights suddenly moved upwards. Once the lights cleared the tree line they recognized the triangular structure they were chasing in the first place.

PIC - 3 Later that evening I went back to this location to make me an impression of the surroundings after sunset. Visible to the left, on the horizon, we see a tower in floodlights with a public belvedere on top of it.
This tower is positioned next to a hydroelectric dam on the Gillepe. In this direction, somewhat to the left of the tower, and just arriving at this location, both police officers witnessed a strange lightshow low in the sky. This show consisted of a central stationary light producing two horizontal red beams slowly expanding in opposite directions, and retracting, over and over again.

I choose to take pictures and take notes on both locations and was, due to this activity, not always able to listen in to the verbal explanations to the press, by Heinrich and Hubert. Perhaps it was not a good idea to leave my car behind in the casern in Eupen because now I had to adapt to the tight time schedule imposed by the members of the press. I choose to join the press photographer, in his car, because in this way I was able to ask more in depth questions what really happened at the time. Both protagonist, Heinrich and Hubert, were present in the backseats of the car and answered my questions in a very relaxed, even making jokes about what they saw at the time. But once on location I had a hard time listen in, ask questions, and take pictures all at once.

Due to this, and the time pressure, a few major errors slipped into my first report. I stated in this report that no beams, coming from the circles of light in each corner of the triangle, were visible in the atmosphere or visible on the ground (meadow). Later I learned that the opposite was true. Even in the freezing temperatures, and dry air conditions at the time, three well defined cones were clearly visible in the air and also their effect on the ground. The first - partly flawed – report of my investigation in Eupen (Dec 9. 1989)
is now circling the internet but with my name removed. A the time I was the only Flemish investigator (and still I remain to date) able to interview Heinrich and Hubert in their casern, in Eupen, and on location.

Immediately after my investigation in Eupen I made contact with SOBEPS “Société Belge d’Etude des Phénomènes Spatiaux” in
Brussels, the capital of Belgium, to join them. At the time this was the only organisation, in the French part of our country, doing research on this kind of sightings, working – in this  unique occasion - close together with scientist, universities and also defence. Working on location, in an office of the local press in Eupen, this organisation was able to interview hundreds of witnesses claiming having seen the same structure floating in the sky, the same night Heinrich and Hubert were chasing this intruder of unknown origin. SOBEPS cease to exist end 2007. In 2009, with the original rapports at hand, co-founder Patrick Ferryn chose to partly resurrect SOBEPS, labelling it COBEPS this time. The only person with a keen interest in the Eupen sightings, also residing in the Flemish part of my country as I am, was Jan Hertoghs. With his publications in HUMO TV-magazine this reporter kept the Flemish part of my country updated concerning this strange sightings, happening on a regular basis, in this isolated corner of Belgium (next to the border of Germany and the Netherlands).  On more than one occasion he went to Eupen to interview locals who saw this strange intruder.
Only one person was able to snap a clear picture of the intruder (Petit-Rechain - April 4, 1990). The original color slide was analyzed by François Louange (CNES), Dr. Richard Haines (NARCAP Chief Scientist - NASA former senior scientist), Professor André Marion (CNES – University Paris-Sud). Through the analysis many hidden elements were revealed showing this picture could not be faked.

July 2011 a person, only known as ‘Patrick M’, contacted the RTL TV station to explain this picture was – in fact - a fake. Inspired by the observations in Eupen (November, 1989) Patrick  fabricated a small model, of the famous triangle, with a tiny light in each corner and a central, red painted, light.

The color slide he made of his model (April, 1990) ended up in the hands of Belga photographer Guy Mossay , in fact by coincidence. Patrick made this fake, of the notorious ‘Belgian Triangle”, to impress his workmates but 'forgot' to mention this ‘little’ detail when he handed over his slide to Guy Mossay.

How Patrick M could foul the scientific community, with a simple model, is now also a mystery. Professor Emeritus Auguste Meessen was not impressed because, to him, the lights in each corner of the triangle  - visible in this notorious picture - are much to complex to be no more than the tiny lights bulbs coming from a flash-light. To realise what is wrong here one should make up his own mind by reading one of the official studies, of this notorious picture/slide (see LINK). Now obviously something is seriously wrong here but what ... let’s see what the future will bring!

A friend of mine, Patrick AB Mahieu, became impressed by these strange events in Eupen and the overall conclusion that the extra-terrestrial hypothesis could (still) not be excluded, in this now world famous case. This inspired him to write an essay (see LINK) how we, as a complex society, should "think about" and "deal with" the concept of a possible extra-terrestrial visitation.

"Pleidooi voor een Open wetenschappelijk denken over Buitenaards Bezoek"

Together we founded “CAAP” (Critical Approach of Alien Presence) to investigate and promote scientific research into this kind of sightings. One of the major problems to tackle was the dubious UFO expression witch we did with a new, less emotional, approach we labelled M.A.T (Manifestation of Alien Technology). Now 21 years later (Nov 2010) this mysterious intruder in Eupen 1989 became a strong candidate for a M.A.T also because to date (Nov 2010) no one came forward with an acceptable explanation (for the bulk of the sightings with inclusion of the annoying details). Over the years we also came to realise that this “Triangle” sighting was far from unique and became, because of his manifestation in different locations worldwide, know as the “Black Triangle” (more to come)
